💚 From the moment you find out you’re pregnant, one of the most important choices you’ll make is who you choose as your provider, and even more than that, what kind of birth model they follow.

Believe it or not, how your provider thinks about birth can shape how your labor unfolds, how your body feels after birth, and how smooth your postpartum recovery is.

Let’s break this down.

Most providers fall somewhere along a spectrum between two ways of thinking about birth:

✨ The physiologic model

🏥 The medical model

Midwives are usually trained and practice within the physiologic model. OBGYNs are usually trained and practice within the medical model, especially to support higher-risk pregnancies or births that may need intervention.

But this isn’t black-and-white.

Some midwives lean more medical, and some OBGYNs support a physiologic mindset.

What matters is understanding the difference, because you get to decide what kind of birth you want and what kind of support you’ll need to make it happen.

🤔 So what exactly is the physiologic model of birth?

This model sees birth as a natural, body-led event. It trusts your body to guide the process and promotes conditions that let labor unfold smoothly and safely.

Here’s what that usually looks like:

✔️ Labor begins on its own

✔️ Your body produces natural oxytocin to keep things moving

✔️ You move and change positions freely

✔️ You push when you feel the urge, not when someone tells you

✔️ Interventions are used only when truly needed

✔️ You stay in charge of your choices

🤱🏾The result? Less trauma. More satisfaction. A smoother postpartum.

This way of birthing works with your body and not against it. And it helps protect your pelvic floor, too.

Now, the medical model.

This approach sees birth as something to manage or control. It’s great for emergencies or high-risk situations, but many people with healthy pregnancies still give birth under this model by default.

 It often includes:

❌ Routine interventions like inductions, cervical checks, or episiotomies

❌ Strict rules about eating, drinking, and moving

❌ Pushing on someone else’s schedule

❌ One-size-fits-all birth positions (usually flat on your back)

❌ Hospital timelines that don’t match your body’s rhythm

❌ You becoming the “patient”, which can make it harder to speak up

These things can interrupt the natural flow of labor, and they also can add strain to your body, specifically your pelvic floor, making injury or tearing more likely.

Here’s the good news:

You don’t have to choose one or the other.

Even if you're birthing in a hospital (where 90% of births happen!), you can still lean into the physiologic model and lower your risks for injury, trauma, and difficult recovery.

✨ In fact, many women are doing exactly that, with a little planning and the right kind of information & preparation.

🙌 Why might your postpartum pelvis thank you for choosing a more physiologic approach?

👉 Fewer injuries like tearing, prolapse, and hemorrhoids

👉 Better recovery with less pain and less strain on your body

👉 More control and confidence before, during, and after birth

That’s exactly what I teach inside the Pelvic Floor Protection Plan, a step-by-step guide to prep your body & your birth plan so you feel strong, ready, and supported.

This is especially for you if:

🌿 You want a low-intervention or possibly unmedicated hospital birth

🌿 You want to reduce your risk of pelvic floor trauma

🌿 You’re thinking beyond birth and into long-term healing

🌿 You want a provider who supports your choices

🌿 You want to protect your postpartum body, not just get through birth

Can you have your ideal birth within the medical model?

✅ Yes, you can. But you’ll need to plan ahead, ask the right questions, and advocate for yourself.

And, women are not generally given this kind of info đź’”

 Here’s how to start:

🔹 Choose a provider who supports your birth goals

🔹 Create a clear birth plan that reflects your birth vision

🔹 Have honest convos about your preferences and boundaries

🔹 Consider a doula or birth support person to help advocate for you

🔹 Prep your body so you’re ready for birth and recovery

🔹 Learn tools and movements to stay in sync with your body, even in a hospital room

The truth is: you don’t have to fear the hospital. You just need to go in prepared.

And I’d love to help you get there. 💛

You are invited to join over 2000 families who’ve learned how to protect their pelvic floor during birth, without fear, without confusion, and without giving up their power.

These things aren't as helpful as we're told:

❌ Pushing practice (without pelvic prep)

❌ Perineal massage (it's painful!)

❌ Warm compresses (not enough on its own)

 What actually protects you:

✔️ Exercises that open your pelvis

✔️ Training your pelvic floor to release

✔️ Pushing with ease, not force

✔️ Creating more space at baby's exit
