Let’s be real, birthing a baby is a big job. But it doesn’t have to be all struggle and strain. When you learn simple ways to work with your body instead of against it, things can go much smoother.
So, how do you help your baby pass through your vagina more easily? (I know that’s why you’re here.)
Your body already has a built-in system designed to make birth easier, your parasympathetic nervous system, aka the "chill mode switch." When this system is activated, your body:
🧘♀️ Releases oxytocin (the hormone that powers contractions)
🌀 Keeps your cervix open and flexible
🌊 Relaxes your pelvic floor for smoother movement
And the best part? You can practice turning on your chill mode before birth so it kicks in when you need it most. Here’s how:
1. 🤲 Hands-On Help
-
Apply gentle pressure to spots near your ears, neck, hands, and feet (acupressure points!).
-
Use firm but soothing pressure on your breastbone.
-
Ask your birth partner to assist, and practice together beforehand.
2. 🌙 Set a Calm & Quiet Space
-
Dim the lights with candles, twinkle lights, or soft lamps.
-
Play a calming playlist that makes you feel safe and relaxed.
-
Request quiet voices to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
3. 🌬️ Breathe for Release
Your breath connects directly to your pelvic floor. Practicing deep, intentional breathing now makes it easier during contractions.
I call this the Whole Core Breath because it’s THAT important (and yes, I teach it in my Pelvic Floor Protection Plan).
4. 🗣️ Make Some Noise
When you groan or hum during a stretch, your body naturally relaxes. The same is true during labor!
-
Use low, deep sounds (like moaning or humming) to melt pelvic floor tension.
-
Don’t hold back—let your voice guide your release.
5. 😌 Relax Your Jaw = Relax Your Pelvic Floor
Tight jaw? Tight pelvis.
Try this:
-
Rest your tongue on the ridge behind your top teeth.
-
Keep your teeth slightly apart and your lips soft.
-
Let your jaw hang heavy, like you’re about to fall asleep.
6. 💃 Move Those Hips
Babies spiral through the pelvis, not straight down. You can help by moving with them.
These simple movements open space in your pelvis, allowing your baby to find the easiest path.
7. ❤️ Activate Your "Feel-Good" Hormones
Boosting oxytocin makes birth smoother. Encourage it by:
Yes, these things genuinely speed up labor and ease tension.
8. 🦶 Get Grounded
Grounding your body creates a sense of safety and relaxation.
-
Keep feet flat on the floor when sitting or standing.
-
Use skin-to-skin touch, like holding your partner’s hand or placing a warm blanket on your belly.
9. 🔁 Focus on Something Repetitive
Repetitive actions calm the brain and body.
-
Use a mantra ("I am open, I am strong")
-
Listen to a guided meditation
-
Repeat a simple hum or rhythm
So you see, birth doesn’t have to feel like a battle
By working with your body and using these techniques, you can create an easier, more efficient birth experience. The more you activate your chill mode switch, the more your cervix can open, your pelvic floor can release, and your baby can move down with ease.
But here’s the thing. Chill mode is just one piece of the puzzle to passing a baby through your vaginal with more ease!
